Construction site security checklist for Queensland builders

Most site theft is opportunistic: an open gate, tools left out, no one watching. This checklist covers the basics that stop most of it, from day one to handover.

Before work starts

  • Temporary fencing around the full perimeter, panels clamped and gates chained
  • One controlled entry point
  • Security cameras in place before materials arrive
  • Warning signage on every fence line ("CCTV in operation", "monitored 24/7")
  • Contact list for the monitoring centre and site supervisor

Every day at knock-off

  • Tools and small plant locked in a container or taken off site
  • Fuel tanks locked and keys out of machines
  • Gates locked and fence panels checked
  • Copper, appliances and fit-out stock stored away, or not delivered until needed
  • Cameras' view not blocked by new materials or scaffolding

As the build changes

  • Re-position cameras to cover new high-value areas (appliance delivery, fit-out, upper levels)
  • Extra cover around handover, when theft of appliances and fittings peaks
  • Keep neighbours' contact details; they often spot problems first

If something happens

  1. Don't enter the site if someone may still be there. Call police on 000 for a crime in progress, or Policelink on 131 444 afterwards.
  2. Download or request the camera footage.
  3. Record what is missing, with serial numbers.
  4. Notify your insurer with the police report number and footage.

Where VSG helps

Pole-mounted solar cameras with AI detection, strobe and siren, monitored 24/7 by a Grade A1 control room and set up within 1–2 business days. See how it works for residential, commercial and civil sites.
